Avocados can be used orally or topically to promote wound healing.
Nutrition plays an important role in the body’s ability to recover, and eating enough fruits and vegetables is essential to proper wound healing. One of nature’s most nutrient-dense foods is the avocado, a fruit native to Mexico and beloved for its rich, creamy taste and texture.
According to the California Avocado Commission, just one-fifth of an avocado, or about 1 ounce, contains about 50 calories. It contains healthy (monounsaturated) fats, which is why it is often used in place of trans and saturated fats to help lower cholesterol. Within that one slice is almost 20 minerals and vitamins, including:
- Vitamin K
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamins C and E
- Pantothenic acid
These elements are essential for life and important to wound healing. For instance, vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting, while potassium aids in the formation and transfer of cells. Vitamin B6 aids the immune system in the production of antibodies, which can help protect against wound infection, and vitamin C is a key factor in the body’s ability to form collagen, which is necessary for the development of scar tissue, skin and blood vessels.
